"It's a Rygellian Palate-Perforator," snickered K'Plakgh, evilly. "One minute in your mouth...

...and you're no. Longer. Talking. Like. JAMES. T. KIRK!!!"

(*cue evil Klingon laughter*)

"I'm not even Canadian. What the heck is he talking about?"

Rygellian Palate-Perforator, about to crawl away.

R.P-P. from the...er...left side, I guess.

Yeah, that was the left side. This is the operative, or right, side. Poor Dr. DDS was gobsmacked at how much space there was in my head (shaddup). Which is why this post has a Star Trek theme. "The Inside of Jo's Head, or, SPACE..."

One dead Rygellian Palate-Perforator. The blue stuff you see is part of the modifications made to this obturator the first time it was modified.

I was scared to keep scrolling but you're right, it does look like it could crawl away.

So what I'm not understanding is what has the surgery done to your gag reflex? Is it still there? Or stronger? Not trying to be a perv, just thinking that the gadget looks like an awful lot to have to put in; it was my first thought.

For some reason I thought it would be thin and curved like a shoehorn, only wider.

  2. Doode! Whatever you do, don't let it crawl in your ear! That way lies madness and KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!@#!@#!!!!010101001!

  3. Celeste, my gag reflex is still there (as I found out today; this obturator makes it much harder to eat than the old one did) and is about the same.

Now, what it's going to be like to vomit without a uvula, I don't want to ponder. Eeewww.

  4. I would be scared if I saw that thing crawling towards me. It almost looks like the things that crawled into ears of the red shirts in Wrath of Khan.

So once you get your "permanent" buddy, can you get a glow in the dark one or one with sparklies? I mean a girl might as well accessorize.

  6. Did you ever see a movie from the 50's or 60's called The Tingler? It reminds me of that movie monster.

  7. As I dribbled water while drinking awhile ago (and I don't really HAVE an excuse except inattention) I recalled an old line, "Sorry, first day with my new mouth" Might come in handy at some point.

For some reason the pictures reminded me of an old B&W horror film "The Tingler"

Uh, the left one looks like it's making little baby obturators?

    Or is that just me?

  9. @Caton: I know, I know. I'm getting around to it. It's European style, day first, then month.

@Anon: I hope the obturator isn't making little baby ones. Maybe I shouldn't have been storing it next to the root stimulator all this time?

  10. EEEEEEKKKK!!!! The thought of little baby ones is too much to bear.

It does look as if it could crawl (and as if it *is* crawling).

And also as though it would hurt.

Take care of yourself--wishing you gentleness--

(wv: shoccid, like "I was shoccid when I saw how big that obturator is?)

    Is the posterior part compressible?

  13. Crows, yes, the posterior part is a little softer than the front. It's....gosh. There's not a good comparison. It's firmer than the cartilage in your nose, but not by much.

  14. You're still making me laugh! I love your twisted sense of humor. The device reminds me vaguely of the retainers I wore, at night, from 15-17.

Glad you're getting some good days back.

    Hugs

  15. This made me giggle uncontrollably on a miserable morning.
    Thank. You.

I wish you continued healing. :)

Have you tried/ allowed to use denture cleaner on the obturator? Worked wonders on the retainer I was marginally compliant with.

    Thanks for the description.

  21. My gosh, Jo - that's one freakin' piece of dental work. I guess it is a good news/bad news scenario: The bad news is that you have a whole in your head bigger than we can even imagine. The good news is that the cancer is gone and this supremely odd-looking thing plugs up that big ole hole.

    ((((hugs for healing))))

Modern technology is grand, isn't it! I like the idea of having one w/ glow in the dark sparkles on it - tho I imagine these are expensive buggers and insurance won't pay for "decorative items."
Humor is a big part of adaptation to change - remember that nursing school theory stuff - you are living the theory, and sharing with us so we can learn along with you and help as best we can. Thanks, Jo, and just take each day as it comes (and goes.)
Love to you and Max and the cats.

  23. It truly is amazing what can be done in modern times. It is surprising to look at, but pretty darn intriguing at the same time. I am SO GLAD you are doing better. You have been in my thoughts all month. See, you have been to hell and back and your obdurator is your souvenir!
